The following is news release from Atmos Energy:

Atmos Energy, a member of Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS), is joining forces with natural gas and electric utility companies across the United States and Canada to inform customers how to protect themselves from impostor utility scams.

The third annual Utility Scam Awareness Day is today, Wednesday, Nov. 14. It is supported by an advocacy and awareness campaign focused on exposing the tactics of scammers, such as employee impostors, email and telephone scams.

Employee Impostor Scams

  • Always ask for an employee’s identification badge, which displays his or her name, photograph, and the Atmos Energy logo.
  • If you suspect an impostor, immediately call Atmos Energy’s customer service at 888.286.6700 to verify the employee’s identity and contact local authorities, if necessary.
  • Beware of impostors demanding payment at your door. Atmos Energy employees will not collect payments in person.

Email Scams

  • Beware of bogus emails requesting immediate payment of your bill, particularly those demanding prepaid debit cards.
  • Verify your account number is listed correctly.
  • Do not click on any links in the suspicious email. Your computer may be exposed to viruses. * Verify your account balance through Atmos Energy’s online Account Center.

Telephone Scams

  • Telephone scams are also on the rise, where people pose as utility employees and demand immediate payment of past due balances.
  • If you ever have concerns about the legitimacy of a call, please hang up and call Atmos Energy’s customer service at 888.286.6700.

Atmos Energy will never send a notification one hour or less before disconnection. Customers with delinquent accounts receive an advance disconnection notification by mail. If someone threatens immediate disconnection or shutoff of service, customers should contact authorities.

If you are an Atmos Energy customer and suspect you are a victim of a scam, please contact our customer contact center at 888.286.6700.
