LUBBOCK, Texas — On Thursday, Jerome Mclin, Bobbie Joe Fields’ son, spoke to Everythinglubbock.com regarding Lubbock Police Department’s announcement of a connection between Fields’ murder and nationally known serial killer, Samuel Little.

Now living in Atlanta, Georgia, Mclin said he was only about one year old when Fields was murdered in Lubbock in 1993.

“The presence of not even having her here or remembering her, plays a part in how I carry myself,” Mclin said.

He said family members told him she was a sweet person, but also faced her own troubles.

“It’s always been that love for me wanting to know her and how it would be if she was still here,” Mclin said.

While growing up, Mclin said his grandmother and father raised him. He said he didn’t know how his mother died until investigators called him over the phone regarding their investigation.

“I actually had a detective from the Lubbock department, police department, contact me,” Mclin said. “I’m not sure how he found me or anything.”

He said finding out about his mother’s murder was heartbreaking.

“It’s real painful, like every time I really think about lately now,” Mclin said.

He said his family hadn’t told him how she had died before.

“My family would tell me she died in a car accident, maybe to protect my feelings,” Mclin said.

Mclin and his father and grandmother moved to Atlanta soon after his mother’s death. Since then, however, his father and grandmother have also passed away.

“It’s a hard life,” Mclin said.

Mclin said the only thing he has left of his mother is a photograph with his father, Lawrence Mclin, Bobbie Fields, and Jerome in his father’s arms. He said finding out about his mother’s murder doesn’t necessarily give him closure.

“Anybody else who had that tragic stuff happen to them, I just have you in my prayers.” Mclin said. “I’ll eventually get there. It’s like I really have closure but it just, it really hurts.”
