An Airman assigned to Cannon Air Force Base was killed when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, according to an official statement from the Air Force.
Staff Sergeant Dylan Elchin, 25, died on November 27, the USAF said.
“Elchin deployed to Afghanistan in August and was embedded with a U.S. Army Special Operations Force Operational Detachment-Alpha team,” the USAF said. “Two of his joint team members were also killed in action when their vehicle hit an IED, Capt. Andrew Patrick Ross and Sgt. 1st Class Eric Michael Emond.”
A statement on the Cannon AFB Facebook page said, “We lost a fellow Air Commando and a friend as SSgt Dylan Elchin, a Special Tactics Combat Controller with the 26th Special Tactics Squadron, gave his life in service to his country.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and teammates during this time,” the message from Cannon said.
“Dylan [Elchin] had an unusual drive to succeed and contribute to the team. He displayed maturity and stoicism beyond his years, and was always level-headed, no matter the situation,” said Lt. Col. Gregory Walsh, commander of the 26th Special Tactics Squadron. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dylan’s family, fiancé, and friends. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.”
