The Lubbock City Council on Thursday evening unanimously voted to support improvements to Berl Huffman Athletic Complex. The complex opened in 1980 and hosts various events including soccer tournaments.
Market Lubbock Inc. (MLI) agreed to pay for $3 million of upgrades this year and another $4 million next year for a total of $7 million.
Official records said improvements “will include natural turf, roadway, parking, irrigation, restroom improvements, and new facilities.”
“In the 2019-20 year, a new competitive field sub-plex will be constructed including artificial turf, lighting, portable goals, and bleachers for championship games,” those same records said.
Billy Babcock, vice president of the Lubbock Soccer Association, said these updates are needed to make the Hub City more appealing to soccer fans in town and to potential visitors.
MLI is a nonprofit owned by the city to facilitate economic development. The city and MLI scheduled a news conference on Friday to talk about the upgrades to Berl Huffman.
