The following is a news release from the City of Lubbock:

The Lubbock City Council will consider a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City of Lubbock, South Plains College, and the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA) regarding the possible establishment of a South Plains College Downtown Lubbock Center during the April 12 Lubbock City Council Meeting.

Consideration of the memorandum is the first step toward bringing an academic center to downtown Lubbock. If authorized by the Council, the City would commit to working with South Plains College and LEDA to examine the feasibility of a downtown academic center.

“We are pleased this MOU is being brought to the council for consideration. This is a fantastic opportunity for the City to work with higher education, economic development and the business community to potentially bring an academic center to Downtown,” Mayor Dan Pope said. “Access to education means increased opportunity for our citizens, that’s good news for all of us.”
