The Lubbock City Council will consider the second and final reading early Tuesday evening for a new hospital in Southwest Lubbock.  Covenant Health and Grace Clinic requested a zoning change near the 7600 block of 82nd Street.

Covenant said the facility would be on 25 acres, but the city’s rezoning case would be 90 acres.  The zoning would change from “interstate highway commercial” to “specific use.”

Public records said, “A hospital could generate high volumes of traffic; however, it is unlikely that the traffic would have a negative impact on the area, as the majority of the traffic will likely be coming from Marsha Sharp Freeway.”

Streets in the area should be able to handle it according to the city’s public records. Covenant has not yet said if the facility will be a general hospital or a specialty facility of some sort.

Covenant provided the following statement in repsonse to questions from EverythingLubbock.com:

As Lubbock continues to grow, Covenant Health is planning for services to help meet the future health care needs and improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. For more than 100 years, Covenant has grown with Lubbock and the South Plains by expanding our faith-based mission to meet the call of the region’s health care needs.

As part of Grace Health System joining the Covenant Health network, we are undergoing extensive planning to determine the potential development of a state-of-the-art health facility and hospital in the southwest part of Lubbock. We have submitted an application with the City Planning and Zoning Department as an initial step to potentially rezone 25 acres located off of Marsha Sharp Freeway and 82nd Street to allow for the development of such a facility.

If the zoning is approved, then Covenant and Grace will move forward to complete the planning process, the details of which we will share with the public at a later date. Any new facility would be designed to best meet community needs and would be built with room to expand bed and service capacity to respond to the future needs of patients and providers.
