The West Texas A&M University Orchestra is bringing its live cinema production of The Mark of Zorro to Lubbock, with the performance hosted by the Coronado High School Orchestra at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30 in the CHS auditorium, 4910 29th Dr.
The WTAMU Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Mark Bartley, associate director of the School of Music and director of orchestral activities, will provide the live musical accompaniment while the 1920 classic black and white film plays on the wide screen. The orchestra first brought its rendition of The Mark of Zorro to audiences in 2012, and this year’s production will feature a revised score by Dr. B.J. Brooks, associate professor of music. Brooks has composed the score for several of the orchestra’s live-cinema productions.
The Mark of Zorro was released in December 1920 and tells the story of a mysterious masked man fighting for the rights of people against the colonial government of old Spanish Mexico. Douglas Fairbanks, as the swashbuckling Zorro, shows his skills as a fighter against evil with athletic leaps while brandishing a sword. Fairbanks plays dual roles in the classic film as both Don Diego Vega and the charismatic Senor Zorro.
