The following is a press release from Covenant Health:

As a member of the South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention, Covenant Children’s will host their 7th Annual Child Abuse Conference on April 5 and 6.

The conference is an opportunity for local nurses, paramedics, social workers, teachers and law enforcement professionals to learn more about identifying and preventing child abuse in our area. Experts from Covenant Health, TTUHSC, Lubbock County, and more will be speaking throughout the weekend.

“At Covenant Children’s Hospital, our mission is caring for the whole person – body, mind and spirit,” Covenant Children’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. Amy Thompson.

“We often see abused children only when the abuse has reached a critical point and the child is brought to our Emergency Department. This conference is an attempt to try to address this issue before there may be lifelong or life-threatening consequences. There are few things more sacred than the physical and mental wellbeing of children.”

“The South Plains Child Abuse Coalition is delighted to be partnering with Covenant Children’s Hospital for the 7th Annual conference on Child Abuse,” South Plains Child Abuse Coalition Chairman Carla Olson said. “This will be the second year we have been able to extend the conference to two days (Friday and Saturday) which allows more professionals in many diversified fields to attend the conference.”

“The key to reducing and preventing child abuse and neglect is a high level of community awareness of the existing problem,” Olson continued. “As well as knowing about and utilizing the resources available in the community to assist in prevention.”

The two-day conference is from 8 a.m to 4:15 p.m. on Friday, April 5 and from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 at the Knipling Education & Conference Center, 6th floor of West Parking Garage, on 21st & Louisville.

Cost is $30 for one day or $50 for both days. Continuing education credit is available. Registration details can be found at: https://childabuseconference.eventbrite.com
