Jalen Smith, 24, of Lubbock was sentenced to 60 years in prison for an armed robbery in 2017.  Smith was convicted by a jury on June 6, and then sentenced by a judge on Thursday.

“This is not a happy day,” Said Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney Matt Powell.

“Nobody is to blame but Mr. Smith,” Powell said.  “Crime after crime after crime.”

Powell said Smith was given every chance by the criminal justice system to straighten up and quit committing crimes.

Smith was already wanted for a felony offense when he was arrested in the 3800 block of Erskine Street for putting a gun in someone’s face and stealing a wallet.

“It culminated in a very serious offense,” Powell said. “There’s no joy in it but this is an appropriate punishment.”

His list of previous arrests included burglary of a vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, organized crime, tampering with evidence, possession of a controlled substance, theft, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
