Michael Hastings, 31, was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years in state prison for the August 2017 death of Charles Smith, 25.

Police were called to a one-vehicle crash in the 1900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.  The indictment said Hastings was trying to “outgain” another vehicle when his car hit a utility pole and a tree.  Smith was a front-seat passenger.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed and alcohol were both considered factors, according to an indictment.

A jury found Hastings guilty in September, and the judge pronounced his sentence on Wednesday afternoon.
