The following is a news release from the Cactus Theater:

Legendary American singer-songwriter Don McLean, long associated with the pop anthem “American Pie” will perform live at the Cactus Theater on Wednesday, November 7, 2018.

McLean’s other notable hits include “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)”, “Castles In the Air”, “And I Love You So”, remakes in the 1980s of Roy Orbison’s classic “Crying” and a Top 20 hit with Buddy Holly’s “Everyday”.

McLean, who released the classic “American Pie” in 1971, was honored 30 years later when the song was was voted number 5 in a poll of the 365 “Songs of the Century” compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. The top five were: “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland; “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby; “This Land Is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie; “Respect” by Aretha Franklin; and “American Pie” by Don McLean.

“American Pie” was issued as a double A-side single in November 1971 and charted within a month. Interest from the media and public sent the single to #1 in the USA and Don to international superstardom. Every line of the song was analyzed time and time again to find the real meaning. Don refused to sanction any of the many interpretations, so adding to its mystery.

Cactus Theater owner Darryl Holland calls the booking “Certainly one of the most historically-significant concert events in the history of the Cactus Theater. I am thrilled to present one of the most iconic songwriters in the history of American music on this stage. Presenting the legendary Don McLean in concert on the street that bears the name of his greatest inspiration – is certainly is a personal highlight for me. I know this special concert will be extremely significant for music fans across this region and I’m proud to bring this show to the Cactus and Lubbock in general.”
