Lubbock Police and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to crashes that were approximately at the same time and nearly the same location.  There was a three-vehicle crash and a five-vehicle crash Wednesday night.

The locations were County Road 1700 between County Road 6300 and FM 2641, and County Road 1800 and County Road 6300.

In the three-vehicle crash, a van driven by George McManus, 60, of Lubbock broke down.  He was standing between the van and a pickup truck while someone was trying to help him jump-start the van. A third vehicle crashed into the van.

DPS just before noon on Thursday said McManus passed away at University Medical Center.

New information has not yet been released by LPD on the five-vehicle accident.

DPS released the following statement on Thursday morning:

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated a major three vehicle crash last night [Wednesday night] at 7:41 p.m.

A 1983 Ford van, driven by George McManus, 60, of Lubbock, broke down on North Milwaukee at CR 6300.  Vickie Ellison, 62, of Lubbock, parked her 1992 Chevrolet pickup in front of the van to help boost it off.

As McManus was in between the vehicles attempting to boost the van off, a 1996 Dodge pickup heading north on Milwaukee, driven by Richard Goodgion, 68, of Lubbock, ran into the back of the van pinning McManus between the vehicles. McManus was transported to UMC and is in critical condition.

No other injuries. The crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
