LUBBOCK, Texas (NEWS RELEASE) – The following is a news release from Lubbock ISD:

Ernest Mims has been selected as the new head boy’s basketball coach at Coronado High School, announced [Monday] by the Lubbock ISD Athletics Department.

Coach Mims currently serves as head basketball coach at Winona High School in Winona ISD and has extensive experience as a head coach and assistant coach at the high school level.

He was recently nominated for District 16-AAA coach of the year after leading the Winona Wildcats to an 18-12 season record and playoff appearance. Prior to Winona, he was head basketball coach at Springtown High school in Springtown ISD. He has also served as a varsity assistant basketball coach at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo ISD and Wichita Falls High School in Wichita Falls ISD. 

Mims earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Eastern New Mexico University in 2009 and a Master’s Degree in Education with concentration in sports administration from Concordia University in 2017. He has certifications in social studies composite 8-12 and pedagogy and professional responsibilities EC-12.

He and his wife, Tasha, have three sons: Javien (17), Evan (5), and Greyson (10 months).

Coach Mims predecessor, Layne Sheets, recently became superintendent of Dawson ISD.
