The Estacado Matadors will begin a yearlong celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary with a special event on Tuesday, August 22 at 10 a.m. in the Estacado High School Spectator Gymnasium.

The community is invited to attend as veteran sports journalist and author Al Pickett releases his book, “Mighty, Mighty, Matadors,” recounting the stories of the Estacado High School 1964 AAA football championship. The Matadors legendary season took them to a state championship in their first year of UIL varsity competition, coupled with the unique opportunities for an integrated team to unite a community.

The book’s author and members of the 1968 Matador team, Superintendent Berhl Robertson Jr. and other dignitaries will be present for the celebration event. Estacado High School is located at 1504 E. Itasca. The public is invited to attend and books will be available for purchase.
