The family of 5-year-old Campbell Longley issued a written statement concerning the ATV accident that took Campbell’s life.
EMS and other first responders were called to the 4500 block of Iona Street on the evening of July 4. Campbell was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. He later died.
Campbell’s mom, Cheryl Longley, said the following:
Campbell was riding on his 4-wheeler when the other ATV came over a jump and collided with him. Campbell never saw it coming, he was thrown.
He was taken to UMC with a broken femur, pelvis, liver and spleen laceration, bruised left lung and the right lung had been separated from the chest wall. No head injuries. The fracture caused a pulmonary embolus in his lung.
Because of the internal bleeding surgery and ECMO [Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation] were out of the question. He was unable to maintain his BP and could not get oxygen.
His father and I decided to let him rest. He took four breaths and his body went to be with the Lord. He passed away in my arms.
His aunt who is a medical ICU nurse was able to render first aid, stabilize his neck and provided rescue breaths to him. He regained consciousness at the scene. His grandmother who is a physician was also on site was able to also render first aid until paramedics arrived. He was able to talk to me until we reached UMC where his body began to slip away.
Thank you for reaching out to clarify details.
