LUBBOCK, Texas (NEWS RELEASE) – The following is a news release from TxDOT:

Beginning Tuesday May 7, Lubbock & Western Railroad will start work to make improvements to the FM 179 railroad crossing located just north of 34th Street. Work to place new planking and widen the rail line will prepare the crossing for the new, wider five-lane section of FM 179.

To allow railroad crews to safely perform the work, FM 179 will be closed to all north and southbound traffic.  While local traffic between SH 114/19th Street and Donald Preston Drive/82nd Street will continue to have access, no through traffic will be allowed and will be detoured round the railroad crossing via Research Boulevard and Upland Avenue.

Drivers are reminded that speed limits have been lowered through the active work zone and are encouraged to find alternate routes around the construction area.

Weather permitting, the work and road closure is expected to continue for one week.
