The following is a news release from TxDOT:

TxDOT is ready to begin a $9.8 million project this week that will make roadway improvements to almost nine miles of FM 97 in Floyd County, from US 70 to SH 207.

Motorists traveling on FM 97 over the next eight months will see traffic reduced to one lane at various times and may be guided through the project limits via pilot car as contractor Gilvin-Terrell LTD of Amarillo, Texas, rebuilds the roadbed and resurfaces the roadway.

“The project is making needed improvements and repairs to the pavement and is expected to enhance the overall safety of the roadway,” said Heath Bozeman, P.E, TxDOT Plainview Area engineer overseeing the project. “Crews will start work, in-town, by upgrading sidewalks and ramps to be in compliance with the  Americans with Disability Act (ADA), and make culvert, curb and gutter repairs before moving to road work in early April.”

Minor daytime lane closures are expected while crews work on sidewalks and curb and gutters. No overnight lane closures are planned throughout the project’s duration.

Once construction moves to make roadway repairs, drivers should be aware that speed limits in the rural, active construction areas will be reduced by 10 mph, Bozeman added.

Motorists should expect various lane closures and possible traffic delays and are urged to use caution when driving through the work zone, since crews will be working in close proximity to traffic. Motorists should keep the following tips in mind:

  • Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.
  • Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.
  • Be patient. Delays from roadway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.

The project’s completion date is scheduled for fall 2019.
