Lubbock Fire Rescue responded to the area of 76th Street and Iola Avenue before 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
A photojournalist at the scene said a private contractor was digging in the alley for a fiber line and struck a gas line. Atmos also responded to the scene.
Officials closed Iola Avenue from 75th Place to 77th Street. As of the time of this report, no homes were evacuated.
