Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood, according to the American Red Cross. Blood is routinely transfused to help patients of all ages and circumstances including burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, military soldiers and those battling terminal illness. Dr. Robert Ioppolo with Hill & Ioppolo Oral and Facial Surgeons of Lubbock is teaming up with United Blood Services to host a Hawaiian themed community Blood Drive on Saturday, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their practice in Lubbock.
The American Red Cross issued an emergency call for blood donations earlier this month as shortages worsened around Independence Day due to vacations and other summer activities. One blood donation can save up to three lives and the group’s goal is to help save over 75 lives with over 25 blood donations.
There is no substitute for blood. Blood must be constantly replenished, and nearly half of the nation’s blood supply is collected at blood drives. According to the American Red Cross, blood donations have fallen short over the past two months resulting in about 61,000 fewer donations than needed, which is equivalent to the organization not collecting any blood donations for more than four days.
“We are committed to strengthening our community and helping meet the needs of hospitals and patients, especially during this summer shortage,” Dr. Ioppolo said. “It feels good to give back and know that your blood donation is saving someone’s life. We are excited to make this an annual event to help make a difference.”
The process is quick and only takes 15 minutes. Donors must be at least 17, 16 with a signed parental consent form. Donors are encouraged to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before the donation. All blood types are needed.
