The following is a news release from High Point Village:

World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, is a global awareness day. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about Down syndrome, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our communities. During the week of March 21, High Point Village will “Do Something Extra” for others in the South Plains area and encourages the community to also Do Something Extra in honor of people with Down syndrome.

Do Something Extra signifies the extra 21st chromosome which causes most instances of Down syndrome. Individuals with Down syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. High Point Village is looking to bring meaningful and positive awareness about Down syndrome while also spreading joy throughout the community.

To be a part of the Do Something Extra campaign, go out of your way to Do Something Extra for someone else. High Point Village will Do Something Extra for 21 individuals, businesses, and groups. To get involved with High Point Village’s campaign call 806.698.0015.

Down syndrome occurs in people of all races and economic levels. There are three types of Down syndrome: trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) accounts for 95% of cases, translocation accounts for about 4%, and mosaicism accounts for about 1%. Approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome – about 6,000 each year.
