The following is a press release from Lubbock-Cooper ISD:
Lubbock-Cooper ISD’s Max Kattwinkel will become the district’s full-time athletic director and step down as Lubbock-Cooper High School’s head football coach at the close of the fall semester.
The move comes in response to the district’s continued rapid growth rate. School officials feel the increasing student athlete population calls for the creation of two separate positions from Kattwinkel’s current shared athletic director and head football coach role.
“Max Kattwinkel is an outstanding football coach and has done a tremendous job for our program and our district,” said LCISD Superintendent Keith Bryant. “He has led us to unprecedented success. I’m confident that he will continue to serve the district as full-time athletic director with the same leadership and heart, and we will see that success continue.”
Kattwinkel completes his sixth year as head coach with an overall record of 59 wins and 18 losses. Under his leadership, the Pirate football team made its first two appearances in the Regional Finals and upset first-ranked Stephenville in Lubbock-Cooper’s first ever nationally televised athletic event. The 2018 Pirate Varsity team achieved the most wins in a season in the school’s 82-year history, remaining undefeated until a loss at the Regional Finals level earlier this month.
“Serving as our head football coach the past six years has been a blessing not only to me, but to my family as well,” said Kattwinkel. “The relationships that were built with all of our players, parents, fans, and community will last a lifetime. I am thankful for all the memories, and I am thankful to the Lubbock-Cooper Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, and coaching staff for allowing me this opportunity. My focus has changed, but my passion and heart will continue to be for the service of Lubbock-Cooper ISD.”
A committee of district administrators will begin an internal search for a new head football coach among current LCISD staff after returning from Christmas break.
