The following is a press release from Lamesa ISD:
To inform parents and the community of an incident that occurred at Lamesa High School, the District is issuing the following press release:
On the afternoon of Friday, February 22, 2019, school officials were informed that a Lamesa High School student had a firearm in his vehicle parked in the parking lot. Upon receiving the report, the District immediately contacted law enforcement, and the car was searched. A firearm was recovered by law enforcement in the vehicle. The District’s investigation into the matter determined that the student did not intend to bring the firearm into the school building. Initial reports indicate that the student neglected to remove the weapon following a hunting activity the evening before. It is the District’s belief that at no time were any Lamesa ISD students in any danger of harm as a result of this incident.
Nevertheless, the possession of a firearm on school property, even in a vehicle in the parking lot, by a student is an extremely serious violation of the Student Code of Conduct, District policy and is, potentially, a criminal matter. This incident is being treated as such. All required actions concerning this matter have been taken by the District.
We appreciate the cooperation the District received from the Lamesa Police Department, and the prompt attention it has given this incident. The District will continue to fully cooperate with all authorities having jurisdiction over this matter as needed and fully permitted by law.
Please be assured that our students’ safety is paramount to us, and we will continue to take all measures to maintain a safe and secure environment at all of our campuses.
Due to state and federal privacy laws, however, and to preserve the integrity of the investigations by other authorities, the District will not disclose any farther information concerning this matter. Feel free to contact me or Mr. Jerry Jerabek at the High School if you or your children have any safety-related concerns.
