The following is a news release from Lubbock Christian University:

A symposium held on November 6 and hosted by the LCU School of Education, will provide opportunity for exploration and discussion about standardized testing alternatives and assessment research.

The topic of conversation for the K-12 administrators and lead teachers at this symposium held on LCU’s campus will include standardized testing practices and discussing alternative means of assessments that go beyond those methods.

John Tanner, founder of Test Sense and author of Pitfalls of Reform, will provide the keynote session, discussing student success in terms of more than just testing practices, as well as community-based accountability. Tanner is also currently working with the Texas Education Agency on the “Next Generation Assessment” initiative to look at possible alternatives to the rigid standardized testing the state currently has in place.

With over one hundred regional educators and representatives from all of Lubbock’s schools, the symposium will be a key resource for growing the standard of education for the South Plains.

Dr. Gene Sheets, associate professor and coordinator for the superintendent certification program for the LCU School of Education said, “the Symposium offers an opportunity for educators to explore possible alternatives to the present high-stakes accountability system. We will discuss real assessment with John Tanner, who is the person leading the current initiative to create the next generation assessment for the state.”
