The following is a news release from Lubbock Fire Rescue:

On Wednesday, June 13th, Lubbock Fire Rescue crews responded to Ventura Place Retirement Community for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival crews found a single apartment unit with signs of fire and two operating fire sprinkler heads that had contained the fire to the area of origin. Due to the resident of the unit not being at home during this time Ventura Place staff and residents were alerted by the commercial fire alarm and began evacuating the building.

One resident was transported by EMS for smoke inhalation and no other injuries were reported. After the evacuation many residents were transported by Citi Bus to Seventh-Day Adventist Church where they were sheltered for a brief time.

The Lubbock Fire Marshal’s Office responded and determined that the fire originated in an air conditioning unit on the 3rd floor of the building. That air conditioner unit was recalled by the manufacturer on March 1st, 2018 (https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2018/goodman-company-recalls-packaged-terminal-air-conditioners-and-heat-pumps-due-to-burn).

Lubbock Fire Rescue would like to commend the staff of Ventura Place Retirement Community for their quick and orderly response to this situation.

Lubbock Fire Rescue would like to say Thank You to the staff and members of Seventh-Day Adventist Church for allowing us to use their building as a refuge area for the residents of Ventura Place Retirement Community.

Lubbock Fire Rescue would also like to say Thank You to Citi Bus for their quick response in helping transport the residents
