The Meadow ISD promised to investigate and take action on Wednesday after a parent complained about material that was provided to a student in 5th grade.
Casidy Dixon said her daughter came home with a comic book as part of a reading assignment. The comic included depictions of a topless woman tied up and physically hit with a whip.
The comic also depicted a naked woman being told by a man “I am going to give you to the king … as a present. You will nominally be his slave.”
While women were depicted in the comic book drawings as nude, topless, or otherwise scantily clad, their private parts were strategically covered.
The comic also depicted a man and woman being physically intimate with the caption, “They rutted like wild boars, wild-eyed and grunting, skin and muscle slapping together.”
Dixon said her daughter, “…brought it home for reading material, so she could read it and take a test on it.”
Dixon went to the school and talked to the principal.
“I told the principal this is extremely inappropriate,” Dixon said. “He said, ‘Is that it? I’m extremely busy.’”
She then called the Meadow ISD Superintendent, Darrian Dover. She felt like he didn’t take it seriously.
Dover was not in the office Wednesday. However, he did talk to EverythingLubbock.com by phone.
“Obviously, the safety and well-being of the kids is our top priority,” Dover said. “If something is deemed inappropriate then it will be addressed.”
Dover said there would be an internal review, and he did not yet know all of the facts because he was not in the office.
“I’m confident in my staff. We don’t condone any type of materials such as that,” Dover said.
He did not believe inappropriate material was intentionally placed in a 5th grade class. But he said inappropriate material would be removed.
Dover did not mention if the teacher would be disciplined but did say, “This situation is being monitored.”
He also said a written response would be prepared for Dixon.
Only one student is known to have received the comic. Students were told to choose from a stack of reading materials with each student getting a different item.
“I’m scared, maybe there’s other things on campus. There’s no telling what else got in there,” Dixon said.
“[The teacher was] obviously not looking through it, which is not okay!” Dixon said.
