The Lubbock Police Department would like to remind community members to stay vigilant against possible phone scams. Today [Thursday], the City of Lubbock has received several reports of scammers claiming to be Lubbock Power and Light employees who threatened to disconnect services if an immediate payment was not made by the customer.
These scammers are targeting both residential and commercial customers and are using an ‘800’ number. In some cases, the customer has called back and the scammers answer as if they are a LP&L call center. The scammers are intimidating the customers by threatening to cut off their power if the payment is not made.
The City of Lubbock Utilities will never contact customers over the phone or in person to request credit card information or threaten immediate termination of service.
If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be with LP&L, hang up the phone and call the City of Lubbock Utilities at (806)775-2509 to report the incident and to obtain accurate information about your account. If you believe you have given out personal information such as credit card numbers to a scammer, please call the police department to file a report. We also suggest contacting your bank to report the incident.
