The City of Lubbock Animal Services is an open door shelter providing lost and found services, adoptions, humane education and animal cruelty investigations. They also enforce laws regarding animals for the City of Lubbock.
Annually, Animal Services rescues more than 15,000 animals inside the city limits. A typical shift for an animal control patrol officer is 10 hours. During that time, they work calls from animal bites, enforcing city ordinances and everything in between. Lead Officer, Steven Greene said the summer is the busiest time for officers.
“We probably average 20 to 25 calls per officer per shift,” Greene said.
The calls are not just for cats and dogs. Every animal in the City of Lubbock is under its jurisdiction. When an officer picks up an animal there is an extensive amount of paperwork that must be done. Greene said the job is difficult, but his staff is committed to rescuing the animals.
“We put in long hours with not a lot of thanks from people,” Greene said. “It is a job that not a lot of people can handle, but the people I have on staff are very amazing and do a great job. We are constantly overwhelmed with the case load, but at the end of the day we get it done and do it right.”
The Lubbock Animal Shelter is located at 3323 SE Loop 289. If anyone needs the services of an officer, they can call the shelter at (806) 775-2057.
