On Tuesday, April 3, The Lubbock Christian University School of Education and The Knowledge Center, Inc. will recognize eight Distinguished Educators of Lubbock County at an event hosted on LCU’s campus. Two of those eight educators will also receive the Lubbock Christian University Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The award is presented annually to remarkable educators as recognition for their diligent efforts in educating the generations of tomorrow and encouragement that their hard work does not go unnoticed.
Each of the distinguished educators was nominated by area school superintendents for their commitment and passion for teaching and learning. Among the criteria for nomination was student performance, knowledge of subject matter, use of instructional resources and technology, leadership in the school and the school district, professional development and community service.
The distinguished educators and finalists for the Lubbock Christian University Award for Excellence in Teaching are:
- Jana Abston, Southland Junior High School, English language arts for 6th-8th grades
- Carolina Alonzo, Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center, audio/visual production for 10th-12th grades
- Stacy Bender, Abernathy High School, biology, pre-AP biology, microbiology and anatomy
- Whitney Glenn, Cathelene Thomas Elementary School, structured learning class for 3rd-5th grades
- Timothy Martin, Lubbock-Cooper High School, dual credit algebra and pre-calculus
- Sarah Masten, Shallowater Intermediate School, English language arts and reading for 2nd grade
- Tina Sowder, Bennett Elementary School, math for 3rd grade
- Brent Wilson, Roosevelt Elementary School, English language arts for 3rd grade
Since 2014, The Lubbock Christian University School of Education has partnered with The Knowledge Center Inc. to recognize and honor teachers and the teaching profession. The Community Foundation of West Texas and the CH Foundation have served as grant partners. A committee of community leaders will select the top two recipients. All finalists receive an engraved brass teacher hand bell and a cash award.
