According to final unofficial results Tuesday night, Lubbock County voters approved a hotel occupancy tax (HOT) for the proposed Lubbock County Expo Center.
Cumulative results showed voters approved the proposition, with 64.97 percent voting “for” and 35.03 percent voting “against.”
“We’re very thankful that these numbers came out like they did,” said Randy Jordan, steering committee chairman.
Under Proposition A, the HOT will be raised by 2 percent in Lubbock County, which would fund an estimated $2.6 million per year.
The proposed expo center would cost $50 million or less to construct at North University Avenue and Loop 289 (near X-Fab).
“This is a step in the right direction. Revitalization of downtown is important,” said committee member Tim Collins. “Having activities and venues is important, and I think we’ve paved the way now for the next 20 or 30 years for good things to happen in our community.”
