Lubbock ISD moves forward with consolidation of 2 elementary schools

The Lubbock Independent School District Board of Trustees voted on Thursday to approve the consolidation of Bowie Elementary School into Hardwick Elementary School.

Campus consolidation will take effect in the 2019-20 school year, according to LISD.

The move will allow students to have a full-time counselor, assistant principal, librarian and fine arts teacher, according to LISD.

At the board meeting, officials announced the consolidation will save the district $455,213 each year. LISD said it plans to reinvest the savings into classrooms and programming.

The upcoming bond election in November includes a new wing for Hardwick to accommodate the additional students.

If the bond does not pass, LISD said the students can be accommodated with the addition of three portable buildings. Additional bus routes will also be provided to transport students.

“No staff will lose their job as a result of the consolidation and most will transfer to Hardwick,” LISD said.

This year, Bowie has a campus population of 221 students while Hardwick has approximately 420, according to LISD.
