Lubbock National Bank donates $1 Million to the Tornado Memorial Gateway Project

LUBBOCK, Texas (NEWS RELEASE) – The following is a news release from Lubbock National Bank:

On Thursday, May 9th, at 10 a.m., Lubbock National Bank will be recognized as the lead donor for the Tornado Memorial Gateway Project in downtown Lubbock, having made a $1 million gift toward the project. Next year, on May 11th, 2020, the city will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1970 tornado in which 26 citizens lost their lives.

“Lubbock’s history is our history, and the 1970 tornado is something our long-time customers will never forget,” said Eddie Schulz, Lubbock market president. “Some buildings downtown still bear the scars from that devastating night. The families of the victims have much deeper scars. We are here for Lubbock, and we want to honor those victims as we remember how the city came together to heal and rebuild.”

The Thursday event will take place at 905 Avenue K, launching the final phase of the fundraising campaign. Lead gifts will be recognized along with the unveiling of the park’s name: Lubbock National Bank Park.

The Tornado Memorial Gateway Project was created to raise funds for a park memorializing the victims of the 1970 tornado and honoring the city leaders who responded and rebuilt Lubbock. The park will be located at Glenna Goodacre and Avenue Q.

William Ware, president of Amarillo National Bank, says civic involvement is crucial for a family owned bank. “Community banks need to take care of their community,” he says. “Many of our investments are focused on the future. But sometimes, the most important thing to do is honor the past. Fifty years ago, that storm changed Lubbock. It reshaped downtown and impacted thousands of lives. Those losses and the efforts to rebuild are a huge part of this city’s story.”
