Daniel Reyes Rangel, 19, of Lubbock was charged Thursday with murder for the shooting and killing of Isaias Rodriguez, 34.
The shooting was Wednesday morning in the 2500 block of Amherst Street. Neighbors said the two men had some sort of ongoing dispute before the shooting.
“[Rangel] was frequently spotted with a firearm and was known to shoot at residents’ houses in the neighborhood,” according to the arrest affidavit.
Initially, Rangel was arrested for aggravated assault, and Rodriguez was taken to University Medical Center for critical injuries. UMC then confirmed Wednesday night that Rodriguez passed away.
According to a police report, a witness told officers, “He and [Rodriguez] had gotten into a verbal argument with [two men], in the alley behind his house.”
The witness told officers, “He and [the suspect] continued to argue and [the suspect] eventually started shooting at him and [Rodriguez].”
The witness and Rodriguez ran away into a house after the shots were fired. The witness did not notice at first that Rodriguez was shot in the abdomen. Rodriguez then ran out the front door of a home and collapsed in the street. That’s where officers and EMS found him.
Rangel and another man ran into Rangel’s home, and police detained them as they left the residence, according to the affidavit. In custody, Rangel denied shooting Rodriguez, which contradicted witness statements.
Once LPD obtained a search warrant for Rangel’s home, officers found a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol and two boxes of ammunition, as well as a .40-caliber shell casing in one of the boxes.
A bond amount of $300,000 was listed for Rangel in the arrest affidavit.
