Crest Tires in Lubbock posted an update Tuesday on its Facebook page. The update came with a picture of a box and the message, “Update: these are human ashes.”
“I’m sure that’s got to be heartbreaking to loss something that’s so dear to you and not have it with you and not have to think about where you left it at,” said Jeni Castillo, the manager of Crest Tires, “We’re just kind of want them to get them where they belong to.”
An employee found it sitting on the counter and she put it aside thinking someone would come back for it. It’s been weeks, but no one has come back to claim it.
“We’ve had them for a month and we probably should have wrote something earlier, but it’s one of those things where you kind of just put it off to the side and we really didn’t think anything of it until yesterday and we’re like okay something needs to happen with these,” said Castillo.
“We just got confirmation from a funeral home,” the tire shop said. “Please share so we can get these back to the rightful owner.”
The original post (which was also on Tuesday) said, “About a month ago, at the end of the day, we notice a strange box sitting on our counter in one of our stores we opened it up and it seemed to have ashes in the box.”
“Our first thought is that they are the ashes of somebody’s loved one,” Crest Tires said.
The tire shop staff hoped someone would come back to claim the ashes. That didn’t happen. So, now Crest Tires has taken to Facebook to see if anyone recognizes the box.
Anyone who recognizes the box can call 806-747-9196 or message Crest Tires on Facebook. Ask for Jeni.
