Lubbock VFW to host awards ceremony for essay writing, Teachers of the Year

The following is a news release from the Lubbock VFW:

Knowing the true impacts our educators have in our children’s lives, Lubbock Veterans of Foreign Wars continues to make character development a priority in our community by visiting schools and youth groups and encouraging our community to participate in the VFW Essay writing contest, Teacher of the Year Awards and Youth Scout of the Year program.  These programs are designed to foster patriotism, service to others and to honor the educators who promote patriotism in their daily lives.  VFW Americanism Committee Chairman, Retired US Air Force CMSGT Amos Hasting has dedicated most of his off-duty time to promoting the program and recognizing those in our community who go the extra mile. 


Lubbock VFW has been leading the way in the state of Texas in these programs for the past two years.  Last year, we had the 1st place winner for the Patriot’s Pen category and a 3rd place finisher for the Voice of Democracy category.  The amount of scholarship money awarded was over $11,000. 

This is year, Lubbock VFW had two top finishers at the State’s student categories, one 1st place winner for Elementary Teacher of the Year and one 1st place winner for Middle School Teacher of the Year.  They are expected to received scholarships and monetary awards valued at almost $10,000.

At 1:00 PM on 2 Feb 2019 at Lubbock VFW, 501 114th St, Lubbock, Texas 79424, the Veterans of Foreign Wars will host an awards ceremony for essay writing contest finalist and two 1stplace winners for Teachers of the Year.  

Texas VFW, District 9 Commander Ben Lowrance will lead the awards ceremony.   Department of Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Deputy State Inspector Lavern Tribl will be in attendance to witness the presentation.
