A judge accepted a guilty plea Thursday morning from Yvonne Gonzales, who was charged for the 2015 murder of her boyfriend’s daughter.
A jury will sentence Gonzales next month. She was 19 at the time of 4-year-old Alyrah Sanchez’s death on Nov. 18, 2015.
That day, police were called at 7:31 p.m. to the 700 block of East Quinn Street for reports of a child in possible cardiac arrest.
Gonzales was dating Sanchez’s biological father, according to the arrest warrant. Gonzales told police officers she was watching Sanchez after the father left for work.
Gonzales said the 4-year-old was eating a burrito, choked and stopped breathing, according to court documents. Gonzales said she called 911, and dispatch advised her on administering CPR.
Sanchez was transported to Covenant Women and Children’s Emergency Room where she later died, according to a 2015 Lubbock Police Department news release.
Police at the time described Sanchez’s injuries as suspicious.
Doctors at the hospital noticed Sanchez had bruises on her face and her arm was broken in two places. Detectives continued their investigation, and Gonzales was later arrested for murder.
