A Lubbock woman sued Natural Grocers and Garden of Life on Tuesday claiming she was exposed to salmonella.  The product she purchased, according to the lawsuit, was subject to a national recall right after her illness.

Bonnie Evenson’s lawsuit said she went to Natural Grocers on January 28, 2016 and bought a container of organic shake and meal replacement.  Garden of Life was listed as the maker of the product.

Her lawsuit said that six hours after drinking a shake, she began to run a fever and suffer abdominal pain.  She claims she was sick enough to go to Grace Medical Clinic where medical tests were performed.

The lawsuit said she was later notified by the Lubbock Health Department that she tested positive for Salmonella Virchow.  The lawsuit also said it was “directly related to the Garden of Life L.L.C.’s product.”

Garden of Life issued a nationwide recall on January 29 – one day after Evenson purchased the product in Lubbock.

The lawsuit said 11 people in nine states were diagnosed with salmonella from the Garden of Life shake and meal replacement.

The lawsuit seeks up to $65,000 in damages.  Neither the store nor manufacturer have yet filed their side of the story in court records.
