A grand jury on Tuesday indicted Jaleen Tennison, 21, of Lubbock for animal cruelty.
Police were called to the 3400 block of East 14th Street on the afternoon of April 21. An officer was told Tennison repeatedly kicked a dog and slammed the dog to the ground. A witness recorded part of the incident on her phone.
An arrest warrant said Tennison picked up the dog by her collar and threw her about 10 to 20 feet. According to the warrant, Tennison said the dog bit him. But the officer’s report said Tennison did not appear to have been bit.
The officer found the dog and it appeared to be injured. The dog was taken to Ark Animal Hospital for surgery. The injuries appeared to be both new and old, according to the arrest warrant. Ark did surgery on the dog for hip repair.
“The head of the femur was broken off and had to be removed,” the warrant said. The dog was identified as a 6-month-old Rottweiler.
Tennison was previously arrested on this charge and was able to bond out of jail until his trial date.
Court records said Tennison has been charged with a state jail felony, which means if he is convicted the maximum penalty would be two years.
