On Friday, the son of a Lubbock man who died in a December 2018 car crash after leaving a local bar has now sued that bar for over $1,000,000 in damages.
According to court documents, Charles Churchwell, James Churchwell’s son, has sued Shotzy’s Bar and Grill saying employees knowingly served his father too many alcoholic beverages which lead to his inability to drive safely.
“On or about the evening of December 7, 2018, Defendant sold, served, and/or provided alcoholic beverages to James Churchwell, even though it was apparent that he was obviously intoxicated to the extent that he presented a clear danger to himself and to other persons,” court documents read.
The car crash occurred at the intersection of 82nd Street and University Avenue after James Churchwell lost control of his car and hit a utility pole, as previously reported by EverythingLubbock.com.
Police said he was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
At the time of the crash, police said they did not believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck.
Shotzy’s Bar and Grill has not yet filed its response in court records.
