The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America with the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775, which set aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and in 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the designation of the first Thursday in May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer.
The theme for the 2018 National Day of Prayer observance is “Pray for America – UNITY”, based upon Ephesians 4:3: “Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace”.
“I believe the National Day of Prayer encourages us to pray for our nation to experience unity, Mayor Dan Pope said. “Lubbock has a rich religious history, and the first church meeting was held in 1890 in the Singer Store in Yellow House Draw. Over time, so many churches and denominations arrived in Lubbock that we were nicknamed City of Churches.”
“As Mayor, I pray for Lubbock, I pray for rain to nourish our crops, and I am honored to join other communities around the United States in observing National Day of Prayer. May God continue to bless our great city and help us to continue to make Lubbock a place filled with faith and goodwill.”
