The following is a press release from the City of Lubbock:

Ahead of Friday’s NCAA Sweet 16 matchup between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Purdue Boilmakers, Mayor Dan Pope of Lubbock and Mayor John Dennis of West Lafayette, Indiana announced a friendly wager on the outcome of the game.

Mayor Pope has wagered a Lubbock and Texas favorite, brisket from Tom & Bingo’s BBQ. Mayor Dennis has wagered a case of root beer from West Lafayette’s Triple XXX Family Restaurant, Indiana’s first and oldest drive-in.

“We look forward to a great game between the Red Raiders and the Boilmakers, but expect a Red Raider victory,” Mayor Pope said. “I appreciate Mayor Dennis’ sportsmanship and the opportunity to get to know a fellow leader in a community that is home to a major university.”

“Boiler Nation appreciates and respects Mayor Pope’s unbridled enthusiasm about the Red Raiders’ potential for advancement when they tangle with Purdue,” Mayor Dennis said. “Unfortunately, I believe his optimism will be challenged when our Boilers “whup-up” on the Red Raiders. I look forward to the game, and then enjoying a wonderful meal featuring some Texas style barbecue.”
