A father and son were arrested on Friday for the September 12 murder of Gabriel Rodriguez, 36. On Monday, an arrest warrant provided new details about the shooting death, which was in the 2800 block of Baylor Street.
Police were called to a home for shots fired. A neighbor told police that he heard two shots then saw two men leave the home. The neighbor said one man was older and the other was younger.
According to the police report, “The younger Hispanic male told the older Hispanic male, ‘Dad, let’s go.’” Both men left in a green Suburban, according to the police report.
When police arrived, they found that Gabriel was shot in the chest and his brother, Elias Rodriguez, had been hit in the head with a pipe. The brothers were both taken to University Medical Center, where Gabriel died of his gunshot wound.
Police were able to talk to Elias. He said he and Gabriel were sitting in the living room when an “unknown male” about 25-years-old came through the front door of the house.
“The Hispanic male shot one round into the ceiling,” the police report said. “The Hispanic male then asked who had gotten into a fight with his dad earlier.”
“Gabriel Rodriguez stood up,” the police report said. “The Hispanic male shot Gabriel Rodriguez once in the chest, then attempted to shoot Elias Rodriguez.”
“The gun malfunctioned,” the police report said.
“Another Hispanic male entered into the house and started hitting Elias Rodriguez with a large metal pipe,” the police report said.
Elias then chased the two out of the house. Elias knew the older man but wasn’t quite sure of his name.
Police were later told by Elias’ family that the names were Abel Rosales, Jr. and Abel Rosales, Sr. Police then showed pictures of the two men to Elias from social media. He said he recognized both men from the photos.
Police also had descriptions of the two attackers from neighbors.
Father and son were arrested Friday and booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on bonds of $500,000 each.
