The Museum of Texas Tech University and the College of Education will host the next event in the “Museum by Night: Illuminating Ideas” series at 6 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 15). “Canine Companions: Our 10,000-Year Love Affair with Dogs” will feature discussions, art and demonstrations focusing on the relationship between humans and their canine companions. The event is free and open to the public.
Artists with work displayed at the event include Noelle Moya, Julie Raven, Cranston Reid, David Leake and Cathy Branson. The event will feature live music from Celtic band Yellow Rose Cèili and a cash bar and food truck. There also will be a demonstration by Lubbock Police Department Sgt. Michael Jordan and his K-9 partner, Harley.
Assistant professors Alexandra Protopopova and Nathan Hall will speak on companion animal science, the science behind a dog’s sense of smell and how the animals became domesticated. Protopopova leads the Companion Animal Science Program and Hall is director of the Canine Olfaction Lab, both in the Department of Animal & Food Sciences within the Texas Tech College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.
About the series
“Museum by Night: Illuminating Ideas” is a collaborative effort between the museum and Texas Tech University. Events within the series are held on the third Thursday of the month and focus on various topics related to the human experience.
Throughout the evening, speakers, artists, scientists, theologians, poets and musicians address the theme and interact with the participants. Artifacts from the museum’s collections also are displayed and integrated into the theme. The goal of the series is to provide patrons of all ages and walks of life more access to the museum.
