The Museum of Texas Tech University and the College of Education will host the next event in the “Museum by Night: Illuminating Ideas” series at 6 p.m. Thursday (May 17). “Sounds of the Llano Estacado” will feature discussions and demonstrations focusing on the music of the area. The event is free and open to the public.
Curtis Peoples, archivist for the Crossroads of Music Archive at the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library at Texas Tech, and fellow musicians will present an overview of the music, which ranges from Native American, early ranch settlers, cowboy and western swing, Tejano and conjunto, rock-and-roll and country music.
Featured musicians include:
- Tim McKenzie – fiddle, guitar and vocals
- Kenny Maines – guitar and vocals
- Stephen Sanders – keyboard and vocals
- Stevan Martinez – accordion
- Joe Torres – bajo sexto
- Lesley Sawyer – guitar and vocals
- Randy Cook – banjo
About the series
“Museum by Night: Illuminating Ideas” is a collaborative effort between the museum and Texas Tech University. Events within the series are held on the third Thursday of each month and focus on various topics related to the human experience.
Throughout the evening, speakers, artists, scientists, theologians, poets and musicians address the theme and interact with the participants. Artifacts from the museum’s collections also are displayed and integrated into the theme. The goal of the series is to provide patrons of all ages and walks of life more access to the museum.
