Brad Obiama Duru, 21, turned himself in Friday morning for the aggravated assault of Texas Tech student Gregory Paul Avari, 24.  A second suspect, Alfredo Mozart Lopez, 28, was captured Friday evening by Lubbock Police, and according to official records a third suspect might be involved in the assault.

According to the Texas Tech website, Duru was a scout player for the football team during the 2012 season.  Tech said Duru’s file has been marked confidential and therefore the university cannot reveal if he is a current student.

An arrest warrant said Avari was found severely beaten Sunday and left in the breezeway between two buildings of the University Trails Apartments, 2210 Main Street.  He was beaten so badly that a portion of his skull was visible.

The warrant said, “There is probable cause to believe a brutal assaultive offense occurred inside of the apartment.”

The arrest warrant indicated that Avari was taken from the scene with life-threatening injuries.  His condition improved after surgery, according to the warrant.

On Friday, information on Avari’s current condition was no longer being released by University Medical Center.

The warrant said a blood trail from Avari led to a specific apartment.  Police went inside and noticed a strong smell of bleach.  While there, someone claiming to be a resident of the apartment came home and had even more bleach that Duru asked him to purchase.

This same resident said he was out during the time of the assault, but came home to see Duru dragging Avari outside.  That’s when Duru asked him to go get cleaning supplies.

Duru was held Friday in the Lubbock Co. Detention Center.

Police on Friday morning re-issued a statement in the case asking that anyone with information should please call Crime Line at 806-741-1000.

*Correction: Initially EverythingLubbock.com reported that Lopez asked the resident to buy cleaning supplies.  Actually, according to the warrant, it was Duru who made the request.
