New UMC viewing room offers comfort and privacy

The following is a news release from UMC Health System:

UMC recently completed a small renovation project to provide a better experience for patients’ loved ones. Our new and improved viewing room provides a comfortable, safe and private place to say goodbye to a loved one who passed away while at UMC.

“For a great number of years, we used a room by HR that had bare sheet rock, not painted, and concrete flooring,” said Denny Milam, UMC Security. “It was not the place you wanted to say goodbye to a loved one in. However, administration decided to move this to a space more fitting, and completely renovated it to make it warm and inviting—a better place to do this. We really are providing a service that’s never been here before, and it is truly something to be proud of.”

The viewing room is located in the former Trauma and Burn Services office in the basement. It is completely renovated with new flooring, paint, furniture and artwork. It is locked at all times, so anyone needing access to the room must be let in by either a member of UMC Security or by the House Supervisor.

We are glad to be able to provide a more appropriate environment for people to see their deceased loved one before making arrangements for them.

UMC Health System has developed a strong and enduring culture, adhering to the motto Service is Our Passion, our ‘why.’ This sustains UMC as the employer of choice— consistently ranking among the best places to work in Texas by the Best Companies Group – and the provider of choice – ranking among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for patient experience by HealthGrades.
