Initially, Lubbock Police said one person was hurt in a shooting late Wednesday night at the Lubbock Square Apartments. Later, police provided an update, saying the victim died. His name was Tyshaun Bates, 20, and his family told Everythinglubbock.com they will miss him dearly.
“He did love his life,” said his uncle Leditt Butler, “He loved life. I mean he was full of it. He had a lot of things that he wanted to do, as far as his goals, his plans.”
Officers responded to the 4600 block of 50th Street just after 11 p.m. They said they found one victim with serious injuries. That person was rushed to University Medical Center for treatment.
“We found out last night. Like, It was like a few minutes afterwards,” said Butler, “We love him and we appreciate him for just giving us that and we continue to pray for my sister and her family.”
Butler said they’re just hoping to keep Tyshaun’s name alive. “It’s hard to say what can we do. I want to do something. You have to let justice take it’s course,” said Butler.

Metro Investigating Fatal Shooting
The Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is investigating a Wednesday night fatal shooting at the Lubbock Square Apartments.
At approximately 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Lubbock police officers responded to the apartment in the 4600 block of 50th Street for reports of shots fired. Officers located 20-year-old Tyshaun Bates with life threatening injuries inside his apartment. Bates was taken by EMS to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased.
Investigators with the Metro Special Crime Unit arrived on scene to immediately begin an investigation into the shooting. Based on the initial investigation it appears two black males entered the apartment and got into an altercation with Bates. At some point during the altercation, one of the suspects fired a shot at Bates and struck him.
Texas Anti-Gang Center investigators also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
