The following is a press release from the Lubbock Police Department: 

Officers with the Lubbock Police Department Accident Investigation Unit are investigating a crash that sent one man to the hospital with serious injuries.

On July 4th, at approximately 8:20 p.m., officers responded to a crash involving a motorcycle and a car in the 2800 block of I-27. The motorcycle driver, 33-year-old Marcus Smith, was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Through the initial investigation it appears the motorcycle driver was headed northbound in the center lane and attempted to move into the left lane. The motorcycle struck the back of a car traveling northbound in the left lane. After the collision, a third vehicle in the right lane was struck with debris from the motorcycle.

Smith was thrown from the bike and seriously injured. The three occupants in the car were not injured.

LPD investigators are looking at alcohol and speed as possible factors in this crash.
