A SWAT standoff with a man barricaded in a Northeast Lubbock home ended Tuesday afternoon with the suspect in custody with non-life-threatening injuries.

Rodney Breeden, 50, was arrested around 2 p.m. after police said he fired shots at officers many times. The Lubbock Police Department SWAT team eventually returned fire. He was shot and taken to University Medical Center.

The standoff with police began after Breeden allegedly shot at a City of Lubbock employee through a garbage collection truck window around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of East Quinn Street.

While the bullet did not hit the city worker, the glass shattered as it hit the window. He was treated for minor injuries.

The Lubbock Police SWAT team was then called to the area to find the suspect. He was found barricaded in his home, and he fired shots that hit police vehicles multiple times.

Police did not fire back initially, instead using tear gas to draw the suspect out of the home. The police eventually shot at Breeden before taking him into custody with injuries not described as life threatening.

Prior to arresting Breeden, Lubbock Police issued the following statement around 1:36 p.m.:

The suspect in the shooting has barricaded himself inside his home at 1112 East Quinn Street. Homes around this house have been evacuated and we urge anyone in the area to stay away from the area.

Our negotiators have attempted multiple times to make contact with the suspect through phone and through the LPD PA system.

The LPD SWAT’s B.E.A.R (Ballistic Engineered Armored Response vehicle) breached the front door utilizing a ram device. The suspect has fired multiple shots out of the home striking the BEAR multiple times.

Officers have also deployed gas inside the home in an attempt to get the suspect to exit the home.

No shots have been fired from LPD officers, and they are continuing to try and make contact with the suspect to end this situation peacefully.

Lubbock Police issued the following statement just before 11 a.m.:

At approximately 9:40 this morning, we received a call of a gunshot fired in the area of 1122 East Quinn Street. The gunshot hit a side window of a City of Lubbock garbage collection truck that was traveling down the alley to empty dumpsters.

The window shattered, and the City of Lubbock employee driver was injured by the glass. He was not struck by the bullet. The employee was taken to UMC to be treated for minor injuries.

Right now, officers and investigators with the Persons Crimes Unit are on scene attempting to locate the suspect who fired the shots.

Just before noon, LPD tweeted, “Streets around 1100 block of E Quinn are shut down for SWAT callout. City of Lbk Solid Waste employee’s garbage collection truck working in the alley was shot. The window’s shattered glass caused minor injuries to the driver. He was not shot.”
