Lubbock County VOICES Coalition/Keep Teens Alive Youth Coalition and Starcare Specialty Health System are hosting their 2nd Annual Red Ribbon Rally Kick-off to initiate drug-free week. Drug-free week was created in remembrance of the DEA agent who lost his life to the war on drugs Enrique “Kiki” Camarena and takes place October 23rd – October 31st each year. This week is used as an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. The Red Ribbon Rally will take place on October 23, 2017 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Stages of Recovery.
The Red Ribbon Rally event will be family friendly. We invite you to come out and bring the kids to participate in our truck-a-treat and costume contest for children and adults. Vendors with the most creative trunk will also receive a prize. Several health vendors will be giving out goodies for the kids and educational information for the entire family. Sonic Drive-In will be providing hotdogs.
“We want to encourage everyone to come out to the event and receive education of how to prevent drug use in our community while having some fun.” says Teresa Alvarado, Community Coalition Program Director, “The National Family Partnership reports that sixty-six percent of people 12 and older who abuse prescription drugs get them from family or friends. Alcohol also continues to be the number one drug of choice among youth, because it is easily accessible. Education, prevention and access to life saving measures and medication will curb this epidemic.”
The Lubbock County VOICES & Keep Teens Alive Youth Coalition continues to be actively involved in our community to encourage community collaboration in order to prevent drug use and abuse among youth.
