A 9-year-old Roscoe boy is at Covenant Children’s Hosptial here in Lubbock after being accidently shot in Fisher County over the weekend.

Family members of Keegan Covington told our sister website, BigCountryHomepage.com, the boy was accidently shot by someone trying to kill a rattlesnake.

Covington was staying with a friend at a ranch near Roby when the shooting occurred Saturday.

Family members said the adult responsible believed the gun was unloaded.

The bullet punctured both of his lungs and also caused multiple fractures.

His family said he coded while being airlifted to Lubbock.

A spokesman for Covenant Health told EverythingLubbock.com on Monday that Covington was in serious condition.

Covenant Health also released a statement on behalf of the family Monday:

“We would like to thank the community for their support and encouragement. At this time and ask everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers for our sweet boy. We ask for and appreciate the privacy while Keegan recovers.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his medical expenses.
